What are the Types of Dentures Available?

1. Complete or full dentures

Compete or Full Dentures are used when all of the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. They are replacements for missing teeth that can be removed and put back in your mouth. The denture consists of a plate or arm holding one or more artificial teeth in place. A full denture can be crafted to fit either the upper arch, lower arch, or both. The upper denture has a pink denture base that extends across the roof of the mouth to create suction and help keep the denture in place. The lower denture is u-shaped and is designed to fit snugly along the bottom ridge of the jaw.

A Full Denture may be either “conventional” or “immediate.”

  • A Full Conventional Denture is made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has healed. During this healing time, the patient will go without teeth.
  • A Full Immediate Denture is made in advance and immediately placed after the teeth are removed, thus preventing the patient from having to be without teeth during the healing process. Once the tissues shrink and heal, adjustments will have to be made.

2. Partial Dentures

Partial Dentures are made up of a gum coloured plastic base connected by a metal framework that clips into the remaining natural teeth to hold the denture in place in the mouth. A Partial denture not only fills in the spaces created by missing teeth; it prevents other teeth from shifting.

3. Implant Supported Dentures

Implant-Supported Dentures are held in place by Dental Implants embedded in your jawbone. The great news is that they function like regular teeth. Implant-Supported Dentures can feel more natural and are stronger and more stable, helping you maintain your jawbone over time.

What does getting dentures involve?

The process of getting dentures requires several appointments, usually over several weeks. On your first appointment, we will assess your needs and thoroughly examine your mouth for suitability for dentures. Some of your existing teeth may need to be extracted first or you may need treatment to get your gums into good health before commencing any treatment. The procedure begins with an impression (mold) of your mouth and gums that will give your dentist exact measurements to fabricate dentures that will fit to your specifications. Several “try-on” appointments may be necessary to fine tune proper shape, colour, and fit.

It is normal to experience increased saliva flow, some soreness, and possible speech and chewing difficulty initially. However, this will subside as your muscles and tissues get used to the new dentures.

You will be given care instructions for your new dentures. Proper cleaning of your new dental appliance, good oral hygiene, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new dentures.

What are the benefits of Dentures?

Those who have lost their teeth find both functional and aesthetic benefits from dentures. Well-made dentures allow the wearer to enjoy all kinds of food, whereas missing teeth or poor dentures significantly restrict chewing ability. Dentures also support the lips and cheeks, improving the appearance of a patient who has lost his or her natural teeth. They are very durable appliances and will last many years, but may have to be remade, repaired, or readjusted due to normal wear.

Dentures are custom-designed to fit each patient’s mouth, and skill and patience are required to create an effective pair. Poorly made dentures can cause significant discomfort and erode the gums and bones of the jaw, leading to greater dental problems. They help strengthen muscles controlling the expressions that require the support of your teeth, rid you of pronunciation problems caused by missing teeth, and aid with chewing.

We know that the term “false teeth” concerns a lot of people. However, your East Dental Care Dentist will take every step possible to ensure that yours looks as natural as possible. The base of the denture is designed to look like your gums and innovations in replacement tooth design have come a long way in making the false teeth look incredibly natural. Also, since the loss of all your teeth will have resulted in the loss of support for your lips, cheeks, and facial muscles, your new complete dentures will help fill out the shape of your face and instantly improve your smile!

Whether you are transitioning into new dentures, need your existing ones renewed, relined, or repaired, or are looking for more support for your dentures with implants, East Dental Care can help.
